For the love of entertainment
I’ve been an Oscar junkie for many, many years. When I was twelve years old I lived on Long Island and the Oscars always ended at around midnight. Back then they hadn’t moved to Sundays yet, so they were always on a school night and my mom would make me go to bed when they were only half over. Naturally, I did what any self-respecting twelve year-old would do: I snuck out of my bedroom ten minutes later to watch the rest with the volume turned down way low so no one would hear me in the TV room. I loved every second of it.
My obsession grew to the point where I memorized all of the major winners (Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress) all the way back to 1940. Nowadays I can only reliably go back as far as 1970, but it’s still a decent party trick. If you’re at a party for nerds.
I thought it would be fun to go back each decade to 1970 to decide the best of the best. Which Best Actress winner, for example, was the best in the 90’s? In order to keep from going insane with infinite possibilities (and to avoid the question of snubbing completely), I decided to limit the field to winners only. I may comment on other nominees (or contenders who failed to earn a nomination) only if I deem it necessary. Here are the decades and categories:
Best Actor • Best Actress
Best Supporting Actor • Best Supporting Actress
